Leica has launched the SL3-P, a versatile full-frame mirrorless camera entity blending high-end stills with professional video capabilities, featuring a 44MP sensor, 8K recording, and robust build quality , set to shake up photographers and filmmakers alike.
Leica has unveiled the SL3-P, a new full-frame mirrorless camera aimed at photographers and filmmakers who want a single body for high-end stills and video. According to Leica’s announcement, it is the latest step in the company’s SL system, which first arrived in 2015 and is built around the L-Mount lens standard.
At the core of the camera is a 44-megapixel back-side illuminated sensor and a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase-detection, depth mapping and contrast detection. Leica says the SL3-P can shoot at up to 40 frames per second with autofocus active, use 819 AF points and recognise subjects intelligently. The camera also offers a Multishot mode that combines several exposures to produce files of up to 176 megapixels, while its ISO range runs from 50 to 200,000.
Video capability is a major part of the pitch. Leica says the SL3-P records up to 8.1K Open Gate in 3:2 format, supports 8K at 30 frames per second and offers 5.9K at up to 60 frames per second, plus 4K slow motion at 120fps. The camera also includes Apple ProRes recording up to 5.8K, HDMI RAW output and two in-camera LUTs, called Leica Pure and Leica Cine, for use with L-Log footage. B&H’s specification listing also notes dual card slots, a tilting 3.2-inch touchscreen and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
Leica is positioning the SL3-P as a durable professional tool rather than a flashy redesign. The company says it is built in Germany, uses a full-metal body and carries IP54 protection against dust and splashes. It has also removed the red Leica logo and kept the exterior deliberately restrained. The interface separates photo and video functions, and Leica says firmware updates can be delivered through the Leica FOTOS app. Native tethering support for Lightroom Classic and Capture One, plus Camera-to-Cloud support through Adobe Frame.io, are meant to fit studio and collaborative workflows.
The launch is being paired with two new lenses. Leica is introducing the Summilux-SL 50 f/1.4 ASPH, which it describes as the most compact autofocus 50mm f/1.4 lens of its type, and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f/2.8, which is designed for close-up work and portrait use. The camera goes on sale on 25 June 2026 for $6,690, with kits priced up to $10,995. The lenses are due at the end of 2026, at $4,950 for the 50mm and $2,700 for the 100mm.
