A small change to device power settings, such as turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth during sleep, can significantly extend the battery life of Android-based e-readers, transforming their overnight endurance.
One small settings change can make a noticeable difference to an e-reader’s endurance, particularly on Android-based models that behave more like tablets than locked-down reading devices. MakeUseOf reported that a Boox Note Air 5C used on holiday was draining far faster than expected, even though E Ink hardware is normally prized for long battery life and infrequent charging.
The problem, the site found, was that the device was still staying online while asleep. Wi-Fi remained active, which allowed Gmail, Google Calendar and other installed apps to keep pushing notifications in the background. After changing the power settings so that Wi-Fi disconnected as soon as the device entered sleep mode, and switching Bluetooth off at the same time, overnight battery drain fell to about a third of its previous level. MakeUseOf said the projected standby time effectively tripled.
That outcome is consistent with advice from other e-reader support and repair sources, though the effect varies by device. Kobo’s help pages say Wi-Fi can be turned off to conserve battery and note that it shuts down automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. Asurion and Guiding Tech both advise Kindle users to cut wireless connections when they are not needed, alongside reducing brightness and using power-saving features. The eBook Reader blog has made a similar case for Android e-readers, arguing that Wi-Fi left on during sleep is a common source of avoidable drain.
The broader lesson is that battery complaints on E Ink devices are not always about the display itself. On simpler readers such as Kindles and Kobos, wireless management is tightly controlled and the gains from tweaking connectivity may be modest. On Android e-readers such as Boox, however, background apps and persistent network access can shorten runtime sharply. For users who want a cleaner standby profile, the fix is quick, low-risk and easy to test.
