Google’s Pixel 11 pricing in Japan signals aggressive market entry and potential iPhone pressure

Google’s Pixel 11 series launches in Japan with strategically positioned prices that challenge industry norms, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics ahead of the next iPhone release.

Google’s Pixel 11 series is set to go on sale in Japan on 20 August, and its pricing suggests the company is taking a notably more aggressive approach to the market than many rivals. The standard model starts at ¥136,800 for 256GB, while the Pixel 11 Pro begins at ¥174,800 and the Pixel 11 Pro XL at ¥207,800, according to Google Store Japan. The launch follows Google’s Made by Google event on 12 August, which the company has highlighted on its official store page.

The most striking detail is the base Pixel 11’s value compared with last year’s model. Google has moved the entry configuration from 128GB to 256GB, so the new starting price is higher in yen terms, but the 256GB version is about ¥7,000 cheaper than the Pixel 10’s equivalent in Japan. That is unusual in a market where memory prices, chip costs and currency weakness have often pushed smartphone prices upwards. In dollar terms, both the Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 256GB models are priced at $899 in the United States, which indicates that Google is effectively absorbing more of the exchange-rate pressure in Japan than many manufacturers would be expected to do.

The Pro models are less dramatic, but they still show a deliberate pricing strategy. The Pixel 11 Pro is priced only ¥100 above the Pixel 10 Pro in Japan, despite carrying the same $1,099 U.S. price for the 256GB version, while the Pixel 11 Pro XL rises by about ¥15,000 after a $100 increase to $1,299. That works out to an implied exchange rate that remains relatively favourable to Japanese buyers, especially when set against the weaker yen.

Industry reports ahead of launch have pointed to design refinements and upgraded camera hardware, including a less pronounced rear camera bar. If those changes are reflected in the finished devices, the standard Pixel 11 may end up being the most compelling model for buyers looking for a balance of price and features. With Apple expected to face renewed scrutiny over its own Japan pricing, Google’s move could also put indirect pressure on the next iPhone launch.
