Proton transforms Linux gaming, making native ports largely obsolete

Valve’s Proton compatibility layer has revolutionised Linux gaming by enabling most Windows titles to run seamlessly without native ports, disrupting the traditional development market and raising new challenges around anti-cheat support.

For years, Linux gamers treated native ports as the gold standard. A game built specifically for the platform signalled that a publisher regarded Linux as more than an afterthought. Proton changed that equation. Valve’s compatibility layer, built on Wine and bundled into Steam, now allows most Windows games to run on Linux with little or no extra work from developers, using tools such as DXVK and VKD3D-Proton to translate graphics calls into Vulkan.

That shift has made the economics of native ports far less attractive. According to the Smartworld report, studios such as Feral Interactive and Aspyr were long paid to produce Linux versions for publishers that saw the platform as a niche market. Once Proton made those separate builds less necessary, demand fell sharply, and Feral reportedly abandoned the Linux port of Total War Saga: Troy for that reason. The practical problem is that native ports are not a one-off expense: they need ongoing updates, testing across distributions and continuing driver support, while many older releases were tied to OpenGL and then left to age badly.

In many cases, Proton also offers the better long-term experience. Because it tracks the Windows version of a game rather than a separate Linux codebase, it can benefit from continuous work by Valve, Mesa developers and other contributors. The Smartworld report notes that native ports often lag behind on patches and may not share cloud saves with the Windows edition, creating friction for players who move between systems. Linux Magazine likewise says Proton has made Linux a far more serious gaming platform by removing much of the complexity that once came with dual-booting or manual compatibility fixes.

There are still limits. Smartworld reports that BeamNG.drive returned to a native Linux binary in January 2026 after its developers said Proton carried a performance cost. But the broader obstacle remains anti-cheat. Proton can translate application programming interfaces; it cannot satisfy every system designed to demand Windows kernel-level visibility. Epic has added Linux support to Easy Anti-Cheat for use with Wine and Proton, and BattlEye has done the same, yet support still depends on publishers switching it on. PC Gamer reported that Rust will not support Linux or Proton, while Tom’s Hardware noted that Battlefield 6’s Secure Boot requirement could block Proton on Steam Deck because Proton does not emulate that feature.
