Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, possibly named iPhone Ultra, faces production constraints that could result in a staggered global release, with India potentially missing out at launch.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is increasingly likely to arrive with a tightly controlled launch, and India may not be included at the outset. Business Today reported that the device, referred to in some coverage as the iPhone Ultra, could go on sale first in the US, with other large markets such as China and India waiting longer if Apple decides to ration early supply. The report added that the handset may still be announced in September, but actual availability could trail the unveiling by months.
That possibility fits with a wider set of reports pointing to production constraints. Tom’s Guide and PhoneArena both said Apple is wrestling with manufacturing and certification hurdles, raising the chance of a staggered release rather than a standard global rollout. Macworld also noted that the company could follow the iPhone X playbook, unveiling the product alongside the main iPhone 18 Pro line but delaying pre-orders and sales for the foldable itself. One supply estimate cited in industry coverage suggests Apple may produce only a relatively small number of units at launch, leaving customers in many markets facing long waits.
There is also uncertainty over what Apple will call the device. Tom’s Guide said the name iPhone Ultra has gained traction internally and among leakers, even though some analysts argue that the product’s reported compromises do not fit Apple’s usual Ultra branding. Rumoured specifications point to a 7.8-inch inner display, a smaller cover screen, Touch ID instead of Face ID, dual rear cameras and a hinge designed to reduce the visible crease. Price estimates remain high, with several reports placing the handset at roughly $2,000 to $2,500, which would make it Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.
The foldable is also expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at Apple’s September event, which multiple reports say could take place on 9 September 2026. But even if Apple keeps that timetable, the launch may be more symbolic than widely accessible at first. Tom’s Guide, Macworld and Technave all pointed to limited initial supply, and one report suggested the foldable could ship in far smaller volumes than the main iPhone 18 models. That would leave Apple managing a premium launch with unusually restricted inventory, at least in the opening months.
