Honor has launched a smartphone featuring a motorised rear camera array capable of pan, tilt, roll and flip, aiming to revolutionise smartphone videography and photography with cinematic-style stabilisation and subject tracking, all within a compact flagship device.
Honor has unveiled a smartphone that tries to turn a camera gimmick into a core feature. The Robot Phone, announced in China, centres on a motorised rear camera unit that can pan, tilt, roll and flip to keep footage steady regardless of how the handset is held. The company says the arrangement is designed to mimic a gimbal without requiring external hardware, while also supporting subject tracking during stills, video calls and recording.
The camera array is unusually ambitious for a phone. Honor says the main rear sensor is 200 megapixels with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilisation, backed by a 200-megapixel periscope lens with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The handset is also pitched as a serious video tool, with 4K capture at up to 120 frames per second and 10-bit ARRI LogC3 recording, according to the company. Android Central reported that Honor has partnered with ARRI Image Science on the imaging system, underscoring the phone’s creator-focused positioning.
Despite the mechanical camera module, Honor has kept the device relatively compact. It uses a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED display, rather than the larger panels now common among premium Android phones, and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. Honor lists a 7,060mAh battery with 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, a combination that places the phone firmly in the high-end category. Android Central and Gizmochina both reported that the company has positioned it as a flagship rather than an experimental concept.
Honor’s YOYO assistant controls a Robot Mode that can follow a selected subject and adjust framing through voice or text commands. The system is aimed at solo creators who want automated camera movement without a separate stabiliser or rig. The company is initially limiting sales to China, with a launch date of August 18 and prices starting at RMB 9,999 for the 12GB/512GB model, rising to RMB 12,999 for the 16GB/1TB version. That pricing puts the Robot Phone alongside premium flagships, even as it offers a camera system unlike most rivals.
