AI-assisted identity fraud is forcing e-commerce firms to move beyond checks that happen only once, at onboarding, because attackers can now alter genuine documents rather than build convincing forgeries from the ground up. Microblink says that this shift is making traditional verification less dependable, especially when businesses rely on a single pass of document review before allowing a customer into the system.
The company’s Fraud Lab, which focuses on new fraud methods and detection tools, says the threat is becoming more adaptive and more regional. Microblink reports that portrait forgery, where a fraudster changes the photograph on an otherwise valid identity document, accounted for around 60% of document fraud failures it saw in the US and nearly 65% in Canada. The broader pattern, according to the company, is that fraudsters are tailoring their methods to local document standards and verification controls rather than using one global playbook.
Microblink argues that the answer is not a more elaborate one-off check, but a wider set of signals collected throughout the customer journey. Its Real-Time Intelligence platform is designed to evaluate documents, faces, payment cards and other fraud indicators at the point of interaction, and says it can do so in under three seconds across a very large global footprint. The company also says its systems combine document verification, facial biometrics with liveness detection and payment card intelligence to help distinguish legitimate customers from impostors.
That approach reflects a wider industry concern that identity risk changes after an account is opened. Fraudsters may take over accounts later, while synthetic identities can mature over time and begin to look more credible. Microblink says continuous assessment does not mean repeatedly forcing customers through the same identity checks; rather, it means reassessing risk using device signals, behaviour, transaction context and document integrity as activity continues.
The company also points to the role of generative AI in lowering the cost and effort of fraud. Its fraud researchers say attackers can now automate the manipulation of documents and synthetic media, which makes large-scale testing and iteration easier. Microblink’s services for marketplaces and banking are presented as examples of how vendors are trying to embed identity intelligence into fraud and compliance workflows, rather than leaving verification as a single gate at sign-up.
