Microsoft has announced that it will cease releasing new features for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 after version 2608, encouraging users to transition to Windows 11 for continued development and security updates.
Microsoft is preparing to stop adding new features to Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 after version 2608, according to Windows Latest, which said it was relying on Microsoft documentation. The change means Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the rest of the Office suite will keep running on Windows 10, but only security fixes will continue once that build has shipped. Microsoft’s own support material says Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025 and urges users to move to Windows 11 to reduce reliability and security risks.
Microsoft Learn says version 2608 will be the final feature update for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10, with availability varying by update channel. After that point, devices will remain on that version and receive security updates only until 10 October 2028. The same guidance says OneDrive will keep receiving updates on Windows 10 version 22H2 until 10 October 2028, although Microsoft has not said whether those updates will include new features.
The practical effect is clear: Windows 10 users will still be able to use Microsoft 365, but they will fall behind on product development. That is likely to increase pressure on people and businesses still delaying a move to Windows 11, especially those with hardware that does not easily meet the newer system’s requirements. Microsoft has also signalled that security support for Windows 10 can be extended in some cases through its Extended Security Updates programme, but the direction of travel is towards Windows 11 as the main platform for new Office capabilities.
