Google begins integrating AI-generated images within Search AI Overviews, sparking criticism from creators worried about content originality and safety concerns.
Google has begun surfacing AI-generated images inside AI Overviews in Search, extending a feature it said last month would bring image creation directly into results. The change appears to be rolling out this week, at least for some recipe queries, and it has already drawn a sharp reaction from creators who say it risks flattening original work into simplified visual prompts.
Inspired Taste highlighted an example on X after searching for its own spaghetti squash recipe. The search result showed an AI Overview with cartoon-style cooking steps, despite the site already providing its own detailed instructions, safety guidance and video demonstration. The creators argued that the system is attempting to replace the labour involved in testing recipes, photographing dishes and producing video, while also creating confusion over whether the cited websites produced the illustrations.
The backlash sits within a wider pattern of criticism directed at AI Overviews since Google launched the feature in the United States in May 2024. At that time, users and media outlets reported badly wrong or absurd answers, including unsafe cooking advice and other fabricated claims, which prompted concerns that Google had released the tool before it was robust enough for public use. Publishers later complained that the product could divert traffic away from original reporting while offering limited transparency about how source material was used.
Google has previously defended AI Overviews by saying they are tied to its core ranking systems and are meant to help users complete ordinary search tasks, while linking out to further information. Yet the latest step, which embeds generated images as well as text, raises a separate problem: the risk that AI-made visuals may substitute for specialist content even when the underlying page contains fuller, safer and more accurate guidance.
