Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a comprehensive plan for India’s growth and self-reliance by 2047, focusing on innovation, manufacturing, and strategic sectors to elevate the nation onto the global stage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address from the Red Fort to set out an economic and strategic blueprint for India’s path to 2047, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. The plan is built around self-reliance, innovation and wider citizen participation, with the government presenting it as the framework for a developed India that can compete more effectively on the world stage.
At the centre of the message was a seven-part development agenda covering manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and AI, infrastructure, defence, the green and blue economy, and soft power. TV9 Hindi reported that this framework is intended to create more jobs, particularly in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and defence, while also strengthening India’s position in global supply chains. The emphasis on infrastructure was framed as a way to improve connectivity and support broader economic activity.
The Prime Minister’s Office said Modi also highlighted India’s ambition to rank among the world’s top three AI powers by 2047. That ambition reflects a broader push to link digital technology to economic growth, while addressing fears that automation could displace workers by arguing that new technologies will also create new kinds of employment. The same logic runs through the government’s push for domestic capability in defence, energy, space and manufacturing.
Officials have also tied the 2047 vision closely to Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. The Prime Minister’s Office said the aim is to reduce dependence on imports and build strategic autonomy in sectors seen as critical to national security and growth. That includes nuclear energy, which TV9 Hindi said could strengthen long-term energy security, though the real impact of the programme will depend on investment, execution and large-scale skills development.
