US bans foreign-made robotics in a move to tighten security and limit Chinese influence

The Federal Communications Commission’s latest restrictions on foreign-made robots signal a significant shift in US industrial policy, aiming to curb Chinese technological influence and reshape the future of automation and supply chains.

In July 2026, the Federal Communications Commission moved to block approval for new foreign-made advanced robotic devices, extending a national-security regime that now reaches beyond telecoms into mobile machines, humanoids and quadrupeds. Reuters reported that the rule is aimed chiefly at Chinese suppliers, although officials said some non-Chinese vendors could still receive exemptions.

The FCC’s case is that modern robots are no longer simple industrial tools. They are networked systems with cameras, sensors, wireless links, software and cloud connectivity, which means they can collect sensitive data as well as carry out physical tasks. Officials have warned that such machines could be used for surveillance, expose industrial sites, or in extreme cases be remotely manipulated if hostile actors gained access.

The restriction is also narrower than a blanket ban on all imported robots. Reuters reported that Counterpoint Research places Unitree at just under one-fifth of the global humanoid robot market. For American buyers, that matters because Chinese suppliers have often offered capable machines at prices that made early automation projects easier to justify.

The wider supply-chain impact may be more significant than the headline suggests. A robot is not a single product but a bundle of motors, actuators, batteries, sensors, processors and software, all tied to servicing, data access and spare parts. For manufacturers, warehouse operators and logistics firms, the new question is not only whether a robot performs well, but whether its supplier can remain available in the US market five years from now.

That is why the FCC’s move should be read as part of a broader industrial competition between the US and China. Washington is trying to reduce dependence on foreign technology in critical systems while encouraging domestic production, even at the risk of slower adoption or higher costs in the short term. For companies planning large automation programmes, robotics is no longer just an efficiency decision. It is now a sourcing, cybersecurity and geopolitical decision as well.
