The Asus ExpertBook PM5 G2 stands out with a 144Hz WQHD display and advanced security features, though some design compromises temper its overall premium appeal.
Asus’s ExpertBook PM5 G2 is a strong showing for a 16-inch business notebook, but not a flawless one. In Notebookcheck’s assessment, the machine pairs a matte 144Hz WQHD panel with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 processor and long battery life, making it well suited to everyday office work. The review also noted that the aluminium chassis can creak slightly, while the hinges and the large clickpad do not quite match the premium impression Asus is aiming for.
The hardware specification is otherwise notably well judged for enterprise use. Asus has included Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7, alongside the security features expected of a modern business system. The company’s wider ExpertBook PM5 G2 and P5 G2 launch materials also point to NIST-aligned BIOS protection, Windows 11 Secured-core support, FIDO2 authentication, a fingerprint reader, a webcam shield, TPM 2.0 and chassis-intrusion detection. Asus says the range is designed for sustained productivity and backed by five years of security updates.
Performance is a clear strength. According to the review, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 delivers stable multi-core results, but its higher power demand places real pressure on the single-fan cooling system. Under full load, noise rises sharply. Asus does offer quieter performance profiles, although these trade some processing speed for a calmer acoustic footprint. That makes the machine more flexible, but also underlines the compromises needed to keep a slim business laptop in check.
The display may be the PM5 G2’s best feature. Notebookcheck described the matte WQHD panel as a particular highlight because it combines high resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate, which is uncommon in the business-laptop class. That makes text and motion appear sharper and smoother than on many rivals, which still rely on Full HD panels at 60Hz. The review also praised the battery life and maintenance access, while warning that the base model’s 16GB of RAM looks modest at a starting price of around €1,700. Asus does at least make memory expansion straightforward, which improves the machine’s long-term appeal for heavier workloads.
