Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 pre-orders surge globally, driven by practicality and market shifts

Early pre-order data shows a notable preference for the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 over the Ultra variant across major markets, signalling a shift towards more practical foldable designs amid growing demand.

Samsung’s latest foldable launch is off to a stronger start than its predecessor, with early ordering data pointing to a clear preference for the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 over the pricier Ultra variant in several major markets. Counterpoint Research said global pre-orders for the Galaxy Z8 series were up by more than 30% from the previous generation, while Samsung said the new range was also running ahead of last year’s pace. The pattern suggests that buyers are responding not only to novelty, but also to a design that appears more practical for everyday use.

The clearest evidence came from South Korea, where the three-model line-up recorded 1.44 million pre-orders during the opening week, according to Counterpoint. That was well ahead of the 1.04 million booked by the earlier generation and, according to the analyst, the highest pre-order total yet for a Galaxy smartphone. The standard Fold8 accounted for about 70% of domestic reservations, while younger buyers made up a larger share than before and the proportion of women within that group more than doubled, according to Samsung data cited by Counterpoint.

A similar picture is emerging in the United States. Counterpoint said combined pre-orders for the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra beat the previous record for the Fold family by more than 30%, with the standard Fold8 making up almost half of orders placed through carriers and retailers. The analyst also said the number of former Flip owners opting for a Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra has more than tripled versus the last launch cycle, suggesting that Samsung’s wider, more book-like format is lowering one of the long-standing barriers between the two foldable styles.

In Europe, demand has also been stronger than before. Counterpoint put regional pre-orders at more than 20% above the Z7 series, with the Fold8 standard taking close to 40% of the total. Samsung UK said on 6 August that the whole range had already exceeded the region’s previous launch record, and that combined pre-orders for the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra were up 70% year on year against the single Fold7 model. Pricing may be part of the explanation: in Britain, the Fold8 starts at £1,699, while the Ultra begins at £1,899.

India is the main exception to the Fold8’s lead. Counterpoint said early distribution-channel checks showed the Fold8 Ultra taking about 60% of orders there, with the standard Fold8 on roughly 35% and the Flip8 on 5%. The analyst said most buyers were aged between 35 and 50 and tended to be higher-spending consumers, professionals and businesses. PhoneArena and SamMobile also reported rapid early demand in India, including 271,000 pre-orders within 72 hours, underlining how quickly the series has picked up momentum in that market.

Other markets are broadly positive, though not without caveats. Counterpoint said the Fold8 was the most sought-after model in Japan, Malaysia, China and parts of south-east Asia, with some colour and storage combinations sold out in Japan and delivery delays reported in Indonesia and Vietnam. In China, the model topped Samsung’s rankings on Tmall and JD.com, but analysts noted criticism over the absence of a telephoto camera and S Pen support on the standard version. Counterpoint expects first-year shipments for the Z8 family to rise by double digits versus the Z7 line and to exceed the Z6 series by more than 70%, while warning that pre-orders are only an early indicator and can be shaped by launch offers, trade-ins and supply constraints.
