OpenAI introduces a new feature allowing users to directly access and edit Google Drive files within ChatGPT, transforming the AI from a drafting tool into a collaborative source editor , though some limitations remain.
OpenAI has begun folding Google Drive more directly into ChatGPT’s Library, letting connected files and folders appear inside the chat interface and making it easier to work on Docs, Sheets and Slides without repeatedly uploading them. According to OpenAI’s release notes and a demo posted on X on 13 August, users can now pull a Drive file into a conversation with an @mention, keep it open beside the chat and, where the file type and permissions allow, write changes back to the original document in Drive.
The change removes a familiar point of friction. Earlier Drive connections in ChatGPT were mainly built for reading, searching and answering questions about files. OpenAI’s help pages show that the newer Drive app with sync is designed to keep content current inside ChatGPT, while admin guidance for plugins and apps says Google Docs, Sheets and Slides actions have been unified under the Google Drive app. That matters because it shifts ChatGPT from a drafting aid to a place where edits can be applied to the source file itself, rather than copied into a separate version.
The Library view now includes items in My Drive as well as files and folders shared directly with the user, according to OpenAI’s setup guidance. From there, or from the message composer, a user can attach a file to a chat and work on it alongside the conversation. OpenAI also says whole folders can be selected, allowing ChatGPT to analyse multiple files at once, which is useful for comparing drafts or extracting figures from a group of spreadsheets. The same help material also notes that some Google Workspace scope and shared-drive settings may still need attention during setup.
There are still limits. OpenAI says Shared Drives are not yet included in the new Library flow, and some Google Drive editing and collaboration functions are still missing inside ChatGPT. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, the relevant actions are off by default until a workspace administrator enables them. OpenAI’s broader setup notes also point to a more controlled deployment model for business users, with sync, authorisation and compliance settings managed separately. The result is a more integrated workflow, but not a complete replacement for Google’s own document tools.
