Honor’s new Robot Phone, featuring a motorised camera gimbal and AI-assisted filming, sparks intense debate and marks a potential turning point in smartphone design, despite limited availability outside China.
Honor’s Robot Phone has attracted unusual attention online after a hands-on video spread on TikTok and other platforms, drawing praise from viewers who say the device feels fresher than the typical annual smartphone refresh. The reaction has been especially strong in the US, even though Honor’s phones are not officially sold there. According to the company’s launch details and reporting from technology sites, the device is positioned as a premium flagship rather than a concept model.
What sets it apart is the camera system. Honor has built a motorised gimbal into the rear of the phone, allowing the camera to extend from a special panel and stabilise video more like a dedicated handheld rig. Android Central reported that the mechanism was developed with ARRI and sits alongside a triple-camera array, while Tom’s Guide said the design is aimed at solo creators who want smoother footage and subject tracking without carrying extra equipment. The software also adds AI-assisted shooting features, including tracking and other automated filming modes.
The hardware behind it is substantial. Android Central reported Chinese launch pricing of RMB 9,999 for the 12GB/512GB model and RMB 12,999 for the 16GB/1TB version, with a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, 7,060mAh battery, 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Tom’s Guide added that the phone has a 200MP main camera, a 200MP telephoto lens with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50MP ultrawide lens. It also noted that the phone is expected to remain limited to China for now.
The social response has been enthusiastic, but not universally so. Commenters praised the moving gimbal as genuine innovation and contrasted it with what they see as stagnation in conventional phone design. Others warned that the moving parts could be vulnerable to damage or difficult to clean. Tom’s Guide said durability remains a concern, particularly because any mechanical camera assembly introduces more complexity than a fixed module. For now, the Robot Phone is as notable for the discussion it has triggered as for the hardware itself.
