On-camera shotgun microphones remain a practical alternative to clip-on wireless systems for creators who need directed sound without setting up separate transmitters. In a recent comparison, PetaPixel tested a small group of these mics in camera-mounted use, rather than through a recorder, to reflect how they are most often deployed in the field. The exercise was less about laboratory perfection than about usable speech capture, off-axis rejection and the balance between size, features and price.

The test covered the Saramonic VMic5 Pro, Audio-Technica ATV-SG1, RØDE VideoMic NTG and RØDE VideoMic Pro, with a Sennheiser MKE-600 added as a larger reference point. Levels were matched as closely as possible, while built-in processing such as low-cut filtering and compression was left off so the comparisons would reflect the raw microphone sound. That approach matters, because shotgun microphones are often judged on how well they handle dialogue close to the camera while keeping surrounding noise under control.

The strongest performers in the comparison were the Saramonic VMic5 Pro and the Audio-Technica ATV-SG1. Both held up well at distance, with enough upper-frequency detail to keep speech intelligible even when the subject was several feet away and the background was loud. PetaPixel found that this clarity came with some trade-off in low-end warmth, but it was effective for camera-mounted work where reach and intelligibility are the priority. RØDE’s VideoMic NTG stood out for compactness and flexibility. It is the smallest microphone in the group and, according to the PetaPixel test, delivered crisp, present sound at close range. It was less convincing at longer distances, but it compensates with more onboard control than the others, including features that can help users manage levels in the microphone itself. The VideoMic Pro, by contrast, sounded fuller in the near field, with stronger mids and lows, but lost clarity as the source moved further away. PetaPixel’s assessment suggests it is best suited to quieter, closer setups rather than noisier run-and-gun conditions.

The Sennheiser MKE-600 fared less well as an on-camera option in this comparison. Although it is widely regarded elsewhere as a dependable shotgun microphone, PetaPixel found it had more difficulty rejecting sound from the sides and rear when mounted on a camera. That does not make it a poor microphone; it simply reflects that some designs are better matched to boom use than to compact camera rigs. Other recent buying guides still place the MKE-600 among the stronger all-round choices, alongside RØDE’s compact models and classic broadcast options such as the Sennheiser MKH 416.

Feature sets are where these microphones start to separate. The Audio-Technica ATV-SG1 includes an external input, allowing a second source such as a lavalier microphone to be recorded alongside the main shotgun feed. RØDE’s models offer channel gain offset, which can be useful when recording subjects with unpredictable volume, and the VideoMic NTG adds onboard compression. PetaPixel also noted that most of the microphones switch on and off with camera power through the audio connection, which simplifies day-to-day use. At roughly $200 to $250 apiece, none of them is a budget outlier, so the deciding factor is less about cost than about size, controls and how much processing you want built into the mic itself.
