Lexar has entered the upper end of the docking-station market with the PexarBolt Ultra, a Thunderbolt 5 hub that tries to replace several desktop accessories at once. The company says the unit is built around three Thunderbolt 5 ports and can deliver up to 140W to a laptop, putting it in the same power class as other premium creative docks. It also supports dual 8K 60Hz displays or three 4K 144Hz screens, which places it squarely at users with multi-monitor workspaces and newer high-bandwidth notebooks.
What makes the PexarBolt Ultra unusual is not just its connectivity, but its ambition to combine display, power, storage and monitoring functions in one chassis. Lexar includes DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 outputs, 10Gbps Ethernet, SD 4.0, microSD 4.0 and CFExpress Type-B readers, and an M.2 NVMe slot using PCIe Gen 4 x2. A 5-inch touchscreen on the front shows device count, power draw and transfer rates, giving users a quick status view without opening software. That is a more visible approach than most recent Thunderbolt 5 docks, which tend to prioritise port count and throughput over on-device controls.
The wider market helps explain the direction Lexar is taking. TechRadar’s review of Lexar’s own Professional Workflow Dock described a modular design built for photographers and video editors who move large amounts of media between cards and drives, while products such as Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 Dock Chroma and HyperDrive Next have shown how manufacturers are pairing 140W charging with onboard storage and high-resolution display support. Industry guides note that Thunderbolt 5 offers a major step up from Thunderbolt 4, especially for external monitors and fast transfers, though the real benefit depends on having a compatible laptop. Against that backdrop, Lexar’s dock looks aimed at buyers who want workstation-style expansion without assembling several separate devices.
Price is likely to be the main test. Lexar lists the PexarBolt Ultra at $649, but an early-bird crowdfunding offer reduces that to $479. That still places it above some competing Thunderbolt 5 docks, yet the inclusion of a touchscreen, high-end card readers and an internal SSD bay may justify the premium for users building a single-cable desktop setup. For photographers, editors and power users who need both bandwidth and flexibility, the dock is one of the more feature-rich options in the category.
