Apple's A20 Pro chip promises significant boost in performance and efficiency for iPhone 18 Pro and Ultra

Leaked details suggest Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip could deliver up to 18% faster performance and 30% better power efficiency, potentially transforming battery life and thermal management in the next iPhone generation.

Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip is expected to be a central feature of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra, with supply-chain chatter suggesting a meaningful step up in both speed and efficiency. According to 9to5Mac, a Weibo leaker said this weekend that the chip could deliver an 18% performance increase and 30% better power efficiency versus the A19 Pro.

That would broadly align with earlier reporting from MacRumors, which said analyst Jeff Pu expects the A20 Pro to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process and to bring gains of up to 15% in performance and about 30% in efficiency. MacRumors has also reported that the chip is likely to use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging, a design that places DRAM differently within the package to help improve thermal behaviour and sustained performance.

The packaging change may matter as much as the smaller manufacturing node. In MacRumors’ reporting, the WMCM approach is intended to reduce thermal coupling between the processor and memory, which should help the chip hold performance for longer under heavy workloads. Separate coverage by MacWorld has suggested the A20 Pro could also strengthen Apple’s position in single-core and multi-core CPU performance, while leaving room for stronger graphics and Neural Engine upgrades.

For buyers considering a high-end iPhone upgrade, the picture is straightforward: Apple appears to be preparing a chip aimed not just at peak benchmark numbers, but at better real-world efficiency, cooler operation and longer battery life. If the reported figures prove accurate when Apple unveils the device next month, the A20 Pro could be one of the more consequential silicon updates in recent iPhone years.
