Leaked details suggest Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature significant hardware upgrades, including a faster 2nm A20 Pro chip, satellite-based 5G connectivity, and subtle design refinements, with a September release expected.
Apple’s next Pro iPhones are shaping up as an incremental but important refresh, with leaks pointing to a September launch for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The strongest claims centre on a faster 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, a new in-house C2 modem, and a possible move towards satellite-based 5G, although none of the details has been confirmed by Apple.
The chip upgrade would be the most significant technical change. Tom’s Hardware reported that Apple is already dealing with DRAM shortages that have left about $1 billion in processor wafers waiting to be packaged, a sign that memory supply could complicate final production of the A20 Pro and C2 components. The same report said Apple depends heavily on Micron, with additional supply from SK Hynix and Samsung.
Connectivity is also expected to change. MacRumors reported that the C2 modem is being tested with NR-NTN support, the 5G standard used for non-terrestrial networks. That could allow direct satellite links, or use satellites as backhaul for wider network coverage. Separate reporting from The Information suggested Apple may be aiming for full satellite internet access rather than the limited emergency and messaging functions offered on current iPhones.
Design changes appear more restrained. Leaks cited by AppleInsider and MacRumors suggest Apple is working on a smoother rear glass layout, reducing the visible split between the camera housing area and the MagSafe section. Earlier speculation about a major front redesign now appears less likely, with a Weibo report from Digital Chat Station indicating Apple may reuse existing iPhone 17 Pro tooling, leaving the Dynamic Island broadly unchanged.
The camera system is expected to stay familiar. Reports indicate both Pro models will keep a triple-camera arrangement with 48-megapixel main, ultra-wide and periscope telephoto sensors, with 4x optical zoom. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also tipped to gain a slightly larger battery, at around 5,100mAh, while both models are said to keep 12GB of RAM, reflecting the growing demands of on-device AI features.
Colour options may expand too, with leaks pointing to purple, brown and burgundy finishes. Display sizes are expected to remain at 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, both with 120Hz LTPO panels. Storage could again reach 2TB on the top model.
Apple’s launch plans may be less traditional this time. According to multiple reports, the company could stage an in-person event on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and unveil its first foldable iPhone alongside the Pro models. Broader iPhone 18 releases may then be split into a later cycle, with the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air reportedly held for March 2027.
