Samsung T9 portable SSD hits new low with performance and ruggedness upgrades

Samsung’s latest discount on its T9 portable SSD highlights its top-tier performance and durability, making it a compelling choice for creative professionals and gamers despite some interface limitations.

The Samsung T9 remains one of the strongest portable SSDs for people who need fast external storage, and TechRadar says its latest Amazon price makes it easier to justify. The 1TB model is now listed at $240, down from $288, while the 2TB version has fallen to $405 from $575. TechRadar’s testing found the drive operating close to the practical limits of USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, with benchmark results near the 2,000MB/s ceiling that Samsung quotes for both reads and writes.

That performance matters most for users moving large photo libraries, editing video directly from the drive, or carrying game installs between systems. According to TechRadar, the T9 held up well in AJA System Test, CrystalDiskMark, ATTO and AS SSD, and its caching system stayed stable during sustained writes. PC Gamer and StorageReview reached similar conclusions, describing the drive as unusually consistent under load and close to the top tier of current portable SSDs.

Samsung has also pitched the T9 as a more rugged option than many rivals. TechRadar says the rubberised body survived drops of up to 3 metres onto steel plates, and the drive ships with both USB-C and USB-A cables. The specification list also includes XTS-AES 256-bit hardware encryption and a five-year warranty, while other reviews note that Samsung’s Magician software supports the device.

There are limits, however. The T9 only delivers its full speed over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, so owners of older Gen 2 or Gen 1 ports will not see the same benefit. It also lacks an IP rating for water or dust resistance, which may matter for field work or travel. Even so, the current discount narrows the gap with competing drives such as the Kingston XS2000, making the Samsung model easier to recommend for users who can actually use its interface.
