The Broadband Forum has launched a standardised interface it says will let service providers and software developers manage Matter-based smart home devices through a single layer rather than through separate vendor systems. The group said its new Matter Service API is designed to give operators visibility across connected devices in the home, including products from different manufacturers, while reducing the need to build bespoke integrations for each ecosystem.
According to the Forum, the specification links its User Services Platform with the Matter protocol to create a common data model for broadband gateways, routers and smart home hubs. The organisation says the approach is intended to support services such as diagnostics, automation, energy management and customer support, while also remaining aligned with Matter’s evolving device categories. The technical library entry for TR-517 describes it as a unified platform for managing Matter-powered devices across manufacturers.
The launch comes as the smart home market continues to move towards broader interoperability, but many deployments still rely on proprietary clouds, mobile apps and vendor-specific controls. In a video published by the Forum, Jason Walls of QA Cafe and Matthieu Anne of Orange said combining Matter with USP can make it easier for providers to roll out services and improve the customer experience. The Forum has also said the work is part of a wider effort with the Connectivity Standards Alliance to simplify device management across brands.
The Forum has scheduled a webinar for 27 August at 14:00 UTC to explain the API and its use in service development. Its announcement frames the system as a way to let providers build and deploy connected-home services more quickly, although the practical impact will depend on how widely operators, device makers and platform vendors adopt the standard.
