Google is set to overhaul its Pixel 11’s cellular connectivity with a new MediaTek M90 modem, promising faster speeds and improved power efficiency, marking a significant shift from its previous reliance on Samsung’s Exynos-based modems.
Google is preparing a notable shift for the Pixel 11 line, with the company indicating that its new modem is intended to be both quicker and more economical on power. According to the Google Store, the hardware is “reliable, faster, and more power efficient”, although that assessment is based on pre-production devices tested under laboratory conditions. The claims point to one of the most closely watched parts of the Pixel experience: cellular performance, where earlier models drew criticism for inconsistency.
The change matters because Google’s Tensor programme has long depended on Samsung’s Exynos-based modem technology, while rivals such as Qualcomm have set a higher standard for Android connectivity. Reports from Android Central and PhoneArena say the Pixel 11’s Tensor G6 is expected to move to MediaTek’s M90 modem, a component that is said to support 12 Gbps speeds, dual-active 5G, satellite connectivity and AI-assisted efficiency improvements. That would mark a significant break from the earlier modem strategy.
The reported switch is also tied to broader performance goals. Industry coverage says the M90 is built on TSMC’s 2nm process and is designed to deliver up to 15% better CPU performance and 30% improved power efficiency. If those figures hold up in shipping devices, Google could gain not only stronger reception and faster data links, but also a more efficient battery profile and less heat generation under load.
For now, though, the evidence remains preliminary. The claims come from controlled testing and filing material, not from independent long-term use in everyday conditions. That means the real question is whether the Pixel 11 can translate the promised modem gains into a more dependable mobile experience, especially in crowded networks and weaker signal areas.
