A new leak suggests Apple is testing camera-equipped AirPods Pro, raising privacy questions amid potential AI integration and near-identical design to current models.
Apple’s rumoured camera-equipped AirPods Pro have moved from speculation to something closer to evidence, after a video file surfaced in the latest macOS Tahoe beta that appears to show the earbuds working with Visual Intelligence. According to Creative Bloq, the clip was found in Apple’s own system files and depicts a user asking the software to save something for later, even though no iPhone or smart glasses are visible. That has fuelled the strongest assumption yet that the company is testing AirPods with cameras.
The design shown in the leaked footage looks close to the current AirPods Pro, apart from a slightly longer stem. That detail matters because it suggests Apple could be trying to hide the hardware rather than advertise it. If the cameras are built into the stems, as recent reports have suggested, the earbuds could look almost identical to the existing model from a distance. MacRumours has said the project had reached advanced testing in May, with the cameras feeding visual information to Siri rather than recording conventional photos or video.
That prospect has intensified privacy concerns. Wearables with cameras have already proved contentious, particularly in the wake of criticism around Meta’s smart glasses, and Apple’s approach could raise similar questions in everyday settings such as gyms, changing rooms and public transport. SoundGuys reported that the hardware is expected to use low-resolution sensors aimed at AI tasks, while MacWorld said Apple may add a small indicator light when visual data is being sent, presumably to reassure bystanders that the system is active.
The bigger uncertainty is whether the product is still on track at all. In July, MacRumours reported that leaker Kosutami claimed development had been suspended, contradicting earlier accounts that the earbuds were nearing completion. Other reports have since suggested Apple is still working on the idea, with a possible launch tied to a future wave of AI-focused hardware. For now, the leaked macOS video is the clearest sign yet that the project exists; it is also a reminder that Apple’s privacy messaging will matter as much as the technology itself.
