The global mobile phone sensor market is projected to grow significantly by 2035, driven by demand for advanced imaging, security, and AI functions, with manufacturers increasingly viewing sensors as strategic components.
Sensor makers are becoming more central to smartphone strategy as manufacturers look beyond processors and displays for product differentiation. DataM Intelligence projects the global market for mobile phone sensors to rise from USD 15.98 billion in 2026 to USD 26.14 billion by 2035, implying a compound annual growth rate of 5.70%. The consultancy says the expansion is being driven by demand for more capable sensing technologies that improve imaging, security, motion detection and AI-enabled functions.
The shift reflects a wider change in handset design. According to DataM Intelligence, smartphone brands are treating sensor choice as a strategic decision rather than a routine procurement issue, because camera performance, facial recognition, fingerprint authentication, navigation accuracy and contextual awareness now depend heavily on sensor quality. At the same time, manufacturers are still under pressure to control cost, reduce power draw and secure stable component supply.
Recent product moves suggest the market is still evolving quickly. DataM Intelligence says Sony Semiconductor Solutions expanded its mobile image sensor range in May 2026 with a focus on low-light performance and higher-resolution photography. Samsung Electronics introduced new mobile sensor technologies in April 2026 covering imaging, biometric and environmental sensing. STMicroelectronics widened its smartphone-focused MEMS portfolio in March 2026, aiming at better precision, lower energy use and improved motion sensing.
The direction of travel is clear: sensors are becoming smaller, more efficient and more tightly integrated with on-device AI. DataM Intelligence says manufacturers are now prioritising components that combine multiple functions and support AI-driven applications, rather than simply adding more sensors. The report also points to advanced packaging and semiconductor node transitions as key enablers of thinner devices with stronger sensing capabilities.
Demand is strongest in premium handsets, where advanced imaging and biometric features tend to appear first, but mid-range devices are increasingly adopting the same functions as costs fall. Standard smartphones still account for the largest share, however, because manufacturers are spreading premium sensing features across mainstream models. Regionally, Asia-Pacific remains both the largest and fastest-growing market, supported by major production and demand hubs in China, Japan and India.
