TTArtisan launches ultra-affordable autofocus 85mm lens for full-frame cameras

TTArtisan unveils its Neo line expansion with a $99 autofocus 85mm f/1.8 lens targeting budget-conscious Sony E and Nikon Z users, offering edge-to-edge clarity and minimalist design.

TTArtisan has expanded its Neo line with the AF 85mm f/1.8, a full-frame portrait prime aimed at Sony E and Nikon Z users who want autofocus at the lowest possible price. The lens is listed at $99, making it markedly cheaper than competing autofocus 85mm f/1.8 options from both third-party and first-party makers.

The design follows the same stripped-back approach seen on TTArtisan’s recent Neo lenses. According to the company’s announcement, the lens uses reinforced fibreglass, weighs 332 grams in Sony E mount, measures 90.5mm in length and takes 62mm filters. There is no manual focus ring; instead, the barrel uses a large grip, with focus handled entirely by the camera and the lens’s STM motor. Minimum focus distance is 0.8 metres.

Optically, TTArtisan says the lens is built around 12 elements in eight groups, including two extra-low dispersion elements and two high-index elements. The company says the goal is sharp detail, natural colour and edge-to-edge clarity, while the 11-blade diaphragm is intended to produce smooth background blur. That makes the lens a direct extension of the Neo concept introduced earlier this year, when TTArtisan launched the AF 50mm f/1.8 Neo with the same minimalist controls and autofocus-only operation.

The new 85mm also appears at the low end of the market in practical terms. TTArtisan’s own pitch places it well below the AstrHori 85mm f/1.8 II AF and Meike 85mm f/1.8 SE Mark II, both of which cost $199, while Sony’s FE 85mm f/1.8 and Nikon’s Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S sit much higher once current discounts are taken into account. The pricing makes clear that TTArtisan is targeting budget-conscious portrait photographers first, even if the simplified body may divide users who prefer more direct manual control.
