Qualcomm has promoted Sergio Buniac, a Motorola veteran, to oversee its expanding mobile, computing, and personal AI operations, signalling a strategic shift beyond smartphones into diverse connected devices.
Qualcomm has promoted Sergio Buniac to lead its mobile, computing and personal AI operations, filling a key role at a time when the chipmaker is broadening its push beyond smartphones. The company said he will take up the post of executive vice-president and group general manager of Mobile, Compute and Personal AI on 2 September, with responsibility for smartphones, personal computers, smart wearables, XR and next-generation AI devices. He will report directly to chief executive Cristiano Amon.
Buniac arrives with more than three decades at Motorola, where he held regional and global leadership roles across strategy, product, sales, marketing, operations and supply chain. He has served as president of Motorola Devices since 2018. In announcing the move, Amon pointed to Buniac’s record in innovation and business growth, and said his experience would help Qualcomm build consumer devices from design through commercial launch as the company expands Snapdragon-based experiences in what it describes as the age of agentic AI.
The appointment also restores leadership to a post left open after Alex Katouzian departed Qualcomm in May for Intel. Intel said Katouzian would run its Client Computing and Physical AI Group, with a remit that spans the company’s PC business and newer efforts in robotics, autonomous systems and edge devices. The move underlines how aggressively major chipmakers are competing for executives with experience across mobile, PC and AI computing.
For Qualcomm, the choice of Buniac suggests continuity as well as ambition. His background at Motorola gives him direct experience of handset markets that remain central to Qualcomm’s business, while the expanded mandate reflects the company’s effort to position its silicon inside a wider range of connected devices. That includes products where on-device AI processing, lower power use and integrated connectivity are becoming more important than raw computing strength alone.
