As the iPhone 15 remains available, experts suggest that the newer iPhone 17e offers better value and features for most buyers, despite the older model’s continued support and familiarity.
For buyers considering a new iPhone in 2026, the iPhone 15 is still usable but no longer the most sensible value choice. The model remains on sale in some channels, yet the gap between it and the newer iPhone 17e has narrowed to the point where the older handset now looks hard to justify unless it is heavily discounted.
That is the view taken by Engadget, which compared the two devices and concluded that the newer model offers better value for only a modest price increase. The iPhone 15 launched in September 2023 and still receives software support, so it is not close to becoming obsolete. Even so, the value argument has shifted. In the pricing cited by the comparison, a refurbished iPhone 15 in excellent condition can be found for about $540, while a new iPhone 17e costs around $600.
On paper, the newer phone is the stronger all-round package. It comes with 256GB of storage as standard, whereas the base iPhone 15 started at 128GB. Apple Intelligence support is also an important dividing line: the standard iPhone 15 does not get Apple’s on-device AI features, while the iPhone 17e does. The newer model also has 8GB of memory, compared with 6GB in the iPhone 15, which should help with multitasking and more demanding apps. Battery capacity is another advantage, with the iPhone 17e’s larger cell expected to deliver longer endurance. Both phones use 20W wired charging.
The iPhone 15 still holds a few clear advantages. Its screen is brighter, with a peak figure of 2,000 nits against 1,200 nits for the iPhone 17e, making it easier to use in direct sunlight. It also has a dual rear camera system, while the 17e relies on a single main camera. The iPhone 15 uses Dynamic Island, whereas the newer model returns to a notch-style cut-out. But for most buyers, those gains are not enough to offset the broader feature gap. Unless the iPhone 15 is available at a substantial discount, the iPhone 17e is the better purchase.
