Oukitel’s WP500 Ultra introduces thermal imaging and privacy switch for rugged professionals

Oukitel unveils the WP500 Ultra, a tough smartphone equipped with thermal imaging, a hardware privacy switch, and a high-capacity battery, targeting professional users in demanding environments.

Oukitel’s WP500 Ultra is being pitched as a rugged handset for users who need more than endurance alone. The device combines a hardware privacy switch, thermal imaging and a high-capacity battery in a chassis built for harsh environments. Oukitel says the slide switch cuts power to the camera, microphone and GPS at once, giving users a quick way to isolate the phone in sensitive settings. It also claims the thermal system uses AI processing to improve detail and blend heat signatures with the main camera feed.

The thermal package is the phone’s most unusual feature. According to TechRadar’s review, the WP500 Ultra uses a 640 x 512 thermal sensor and fusion processing aimed at tasks such as electrical checks, surveying and security work. That places it in a narrow professional category rather than the mainstream smartphone market. The same review noted that the privacy switch has a clearer hardware purpose than many software-based privacy modes, although its practical value will depend on how often users work in environments where microphone, GPS and camera isolation matter.

Power and performance are also part of the appeal. Oukitel says the device carries a 10,000mAh battery, supports 45W charging and can deliver up to 20 hours of video playback. The phone is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 8300 chipset, with listings from Oukitel and reviewers describing configurations of 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, with expansion claims reaching 2TB in some marketing material. Notebookcheck reported that the phone pairs that hardware with a 6.78-inch 120Hz display and 5G support, but also highlighted its considerable weight, which it put at 414.3g.

Durability remains central to the proposition. Oukitel says the WP500 Ultra is rated IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H, indicating protection against dust, water and tougher physical conditions. That makes it suitable for field work, outdoor use and industrial settings, but it is not a casual purchase. TechRadar and Notebookcheck both suggested the phone’s value depends heavily on whether the buyer will actually use the thermal camera and the kill switch, rather than simply wanting a large battery and premium chip. In a crowded rugged-phone segment, the WP500 Ultra stands out for specialist tools more than for broad appeal.
