SmallRig has launched a mounting clamp for portable SSDs, offering a practical, quick-release solution for creators recording directly to external storage. The aluminium and stainless steel accessory aims to minimise pinching risks while supporting a broad range of drives, signalling a shift towards more secure and efficient rig configurations.
SmallRig has added another accessory aimed at creators who record directly to external storage, releasing a mounting clamp for portable SSDs that is intended to hold a drive securely on a camera cage or other rig. The design is centred on practical handling: the company says the clamp uses a controlled opening rather than a conventional spring-loaded action, which should reduce the risk of pinching during installation and removal.
According to SmallRig and retail listings from B&H Photo Video and CVP, the clamp uses aluminium and stainless steel construction, with silicone pads inside the jaws to help prevent scratches and slippage. It ships with two 1/4″-20 screws and an Allen key, allowing it to be fixed to the side of a cage or similar mounting point. SmallRig also says the accessory can be installed and removed in two steps, a detail that should make it quicker to move between rigs in the field.
Compatibility is broad, but not universal. SmallRig lists support for Samsung’s T5, T5 EVO, T7, T7 Shield, T9 and T9 Shield, SanDisk’s E30, E61 and E81, Crucial’s X9, X9 Pro, X10 Pro, and WD’s Black P40 and My Passport ranges. It explicitly excludes some WD Elements SE, My Passport and WD_Black P10 models, as well as Kingston’s SXS2000 and SXS1000 drives. CVP’s product information says the clamp is sized for portable SSDs roughly 40mm to 60mm wide and 8mm to 17mm thick.
SmallRig’s wider product listing also shows that the same clamp family can be configured in more than one way, including cold shoe, 1/4-inch mounting and MagSafe-compatible use, while an adjustable USB-C cable clamp is meant to secure the data connection during recording. That makes the accessory part of a broader trend in rigging towards keeping external SSDs mounted close to the camera body, where cable strain and accidental disconnection can be reduced. The clamp is on sale for $26.99.
