Google Pixel Watch 5 enhances AI and fitness features with internal upgrades

Google’s Pixel Watch 5 introduces significant internal enhancements, focusing on faster performance, deeper AI integration, and improved health tracking, while maintaining its familiar design.

Google’s latest Pixel Watch keeps the familiar rounded profile, but the real changes sit inside the case. According to reports on the launch, the Pixel Watch 5 is less about a redesign than a deeper push into software, health tracking and Gemini-powered features, with Google positioning it as its most capable smartwatch yet.

At the hardware level, the biggest step is a move to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, paired with a Cortex-M55 co-processor and 50% more memory. Google says that translates into 20% better overall responsiveness, and early testing suggests the interface feels noticeably quicker when scrolling, opening apps or summoning Gemini. The watch also supports offline Gemini for basic tasks such as setting timers and alarms, which is a useful addition for moments when the handset is not nearby.

Google has also sharpened the way the watch is used one-handed. New gesture controls include a two-finger pinch and a wrist turn, the latter designed to dismiss what is on screen. Reviewers say the wrist-turn gesture is particularly reliable, while the pinch action needs a little practice. The more striking change is Gemini’s tighter integration: the watch can surface contextual information proactively, turning it into a more hands-free assistant rather than just a small display for notifications.

For personalisation, Google has added AI-generated watch faces through Nano Banana, allowing users to create designs from simple text prompts. That makes the Pixel Watch 5 feel more customisable than previous models, which largely relied on preset templates. On the health side, the company says dual-frequency GPS is twice as accurate as before, while the watch supports more than 50 exercise modes and can be paired with AI coaching for training plans. Google Health app integration keeps activity and wellness data in one place, with upcoming software updates expected to add blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends and sleep breathing quality monitoring, although availability in Taiwan is still unclear.

The broader picture is of a steady but meaningful update rather than a radical new generation. Android Central noted that the design and display remain largely unchanged, and criticism has centred on the lack of major hardware innovation. Even so, the Pixel Watch 5 offers a stronger case for Android users who want smoother performance, more capable AI features and better fitness tracking in a compact form. The trade-off remains battery discipline: for active users, daily charging is still likely to be part of the routine.
