Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 introduces significant software improvements and a revamped cover display, elevating its usability despite modest hardware changes and a higher price tag.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 is a familiar-looking update that makes its strongest case in software rather than hardware. The clamshell keeps the same basic formula as before, but it is slimmer, lighter and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with Samsung also leaning on a 4,300mAh silicon-carbon battery to reduce thickness. According to Android Central’s review, the result is a more polished and pocketable phone, even if the changes do not feel extensive enough to fully explain the higher asking price.
Samsung’s own product material says the phone pairs a 6.9-inch inner Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 4.1-inch Super AMOLED cover screen, while SamMobile reported that the handset weighs 180g and starts at $1,200 in the US. The company also positions the device as an AI-focused upgrade, with One UI 9 on Android 17 and features built around Gemini-powered automation and Galaxy AI. Android Central said the new chipset helps deliver responsive performance and better access to those AI tools, including Now Brief and Now Nudge.
The biggest improvement is the cover display. Android Central said Samsung has made it far more usable by turning it into a more complete interface, with quick settings, an app drawer and tighter integration with widgets and first-party services. SamMobile’s hands-on report reached a similar conclusion, noting that the revised cover-screen layout makes the phone feel closer to a standard smartphone when closed. Android Central added that app launching and display options are more flexible than before, although the behaviour is not always persistent across app switches.
Camera hardware remains largely unchanged, with Samsung listing a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide, and reviewers saying image quality is solid rather than exceptional. Android Central said the lack of meaningful camera changes is one reason the Flip 8 feels more like a refinement than a true step forward, despite useful extras such as improved video tools and the My FanCam editing feature. Its final judgement was cautious: the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is a good foldable, but the review argued that the $100 price rise over its predecessor makes it harder to recommend at full price.
