Apple’s latest AirPods beta software adds a custom equaliser that lets users tune bass, mids and treble directly from the AirPods settings menu on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Unlike app-based audio controls in services such as Apple Music or Spotify, the new adjustment applies system-wide to anything played through the earbuds, which makes it more useful for people who want a single sound profile across music, films and streaming video. MacRumors and 9to5Mac both reported the feature as part of the wider AirPods changes tied to iOS 27 beta software.
The option is limited to AirPods models with Apple’s H2 chip, including AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Max 2. Apple’s developer documentation on beta installation says AirPods beta firmware must be enabled through the relevant settings, after which the earbuds install updates automatically while charging near a paired device. The new equaliser is therefore not a universal AirPods feature, but one reserved for the latest hardware and beta software.
To use it, listeners connect their AirPods, play audio, then open Settings, choose the AirPods entry, go to Audio & Routing and select Equaliser. From there, users can switch from the recommended preset to a custom setting and adjust the low, mid and high bands independently. The changes are synced through iCloud, so a setting made on an iPhone carries over to an iPad and Mac, although the feature does not appear to extend to Apple TV. If the sound does not suit, users can return to Apple’s recommended profile or reset all three bands to the centre point.
