That tension is at the heart of Tom’s Guide’s review of SmartWings Motorized Dual Shades, which presents the product as a practical way to keep daylight and views while adding privacy on demand. The review argues that the appeal lies in the dual-layer design, which allows users to switch between light-filtering and blackout coverage without replacing the window treatment entirely.
SmartWings offers the shades as a custom-made product with a wide choice of fabrics, colours and motor configurations. According to the company’s own product pages and blog, buyers can select different control systems, including Matter over Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave, as well as versions designed to work with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings. SmartWings says its rechargeable lithium battery typically lasts four to six months per charge and is recharged through a USB-C connection.
The Tom’s Guide review says that level of customisation is one of the product’s main strengths, especially for homes with unusual window dimensions. It also notes that SmartWings will provide fabric samples and can arrange local measurement and installation support, which may help reduce mistakes on a made-to-measure purchase. The reviewer found the shades sturdy, quiet in operation and visually understated, with the motor and valance designed to blend into the room rather than dominate it.
There are, however, trade-offs. Tom’s Guide says installation can be awkward for first-time DIY users, particularly with very large windows that may need to be split into sections, leaving a narrow gap. The reviewer also criticised the setup process for the remote and said the lack of a dedicated SmartWings app made it harder to monitor battery life or manage the shades from a phone. Even so, the overall judgement was positive, with the review concluding that the product offers strong performance and a premium feel for buyers willing to pay for a tailored solution.
