Apple Music mandates 'Made With AI' labels as industry accelerates transparency efforts

Apple Music is set to introduce mandatory ‘Made With AI’ labels for AI-generated songs, signalling a push towards greater transparency amid a surge in AI music uploads and tightening regulation worldwide.

Apple Music is moving to make AI disclosure unavoidable, after saying it will require “Made With AI” labels on songs that are materially generated with artificial intelligence. The labels, which began as optional AI Transparency Tags in March 2026, will be shown to all listeners later this year, according to Apple’s newsroom announcement.

The timing reflects how quickly AI music has filled streaming catalogues. Deezer said in July that AI-generated material now makes up more than half of daily new uploads on its service, with peaks of 90,000 AI tracks a day in June 2026. The platform also said it would remove AI tracks used for streaming fraud and those that have not been streamed for at least six months.

Spotify has taken a different path, introducing AI Persona badges for profiles that represent AI-generated identities and excluding those acts from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless users choose to engage with them. Apple’s approach is less restrictive: the music can remain available, but listeners will be told when artificial intelligence was materially involved.

The regulatory backdrop is tightening as well. The European Union’s AI Act began enforcement on August 2, 2026, and requires machine-readable provenance marks on AI-generated content. That model is meant to preserve a record of how material was made, even if a visible label is removed later.

Industry groups are also pushing for a common standard. In July 2026, the RIAA, IFPI and SAG-AFTRA proposed a universal AI music label modelled on the explicit-content “E” tag. QR codes are emerging as a parallel authentication layer in music, linking physical releases to provenance records, artist profiles and royalty data. Together, these measures point to the same shift: digital content is being pushed towards verifiable origin, not just distribution.
