Honor’s innovative Robot Phone features a motorised gimbal embedded in its rear housing, transforming mobile filmmaking with advanced stabilisation and professional-grade video capabilities, setting a new benchmark for smartphones aimed at creators.
Honor’s Robot Phone is one of the few recent handsets that feels genuinely different rather than merely faster. In hands-on testing reported by Stuff, the device looks conventional from the front, but hides a motorised camera system in its rear housing that turns a flagship smartphone into something closer to a pocket video rig. The result is a phone that could change how creators shoot stabilised footage on mobile.
The design centres on a 200MP main camera mounted on a folding gimbal arm. According to Stuff, the mechanism sits behind a sliding glass cover and unfolds with a motorised action when activated. The phone also carries a 50MP ultrawide camera and a 200MP periscope telephoto with 2.7x optical zoom. In practice, the gimbal gives the main camera four-axis stabilisation and subject tracking that far exceeds what standard optical image stabilisation can deliver.
That novelty comes with flagship hardware to match. DPReview and other launch reports say the Robot Phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a 6.3in OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and peak brightness of 6,800 nits. Memory and storage options reportedly go up to 16GB and 1TB. Power comes from a 7,060mAh battery, with 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
Honor has also pushed the device towards serious video work. Tom’s Guide reported that the company has paired the phone with ARRI colour science and LOG recording support, aimed at creators who want footage they can grade later. Stuff noted that the camera app offers manual gimbal control, focus-lock options and preset shooting modes, while on-device LUTs provide a preview of the final look without baking in the effect. That flexibility is unusual for a phone and makes the Robot Phone feel closer to a compact production tool.
Still, the concept is not without compromises. Stuff said the gimbal cover must be opened by hand and the phone does not automatically detect its position, so it can briefly try to deploy even when space is tight. Bleuken also flagged concerns about weight, durability and the relatively modest IP54 rating. The same reports suggest this is more a proof of concept than a mass-market product, and Honor is unlikely to sell it widely outside China once taxes and import costs are added.
Even so, the device stands out because it solves a real problem rather than adding another incremental spec bump. If Honor can refine the mechanism and reduce the compromises, the Robot Phone could point to a new category of smartphone: one built not just for consumption and communication, but for serious moving-image capture as well.
