Following recent updates, Apple clarifies that iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices may temporarily slow down due to Spotlight rebuilding its search index, a process essential for integrating new search and AI capabilities.
Apple has acknowledged that iPhone, iPad and Mac devices can feel slower, run warmer and draw more battery after an update because Spotlight is busy rebuilding its search index. According to Apple’s support material, the process can take several hours and, on devices with large amounts of data, even a few days.
The reason is straightforward: Spotlight has to catalogue apps, documents, messages, contacts, photos, music, podcasts, notes and settings so they can be found quickly later. Apple says the index stays on the device, remains private and is not shared with Apple or with other devices, which means the work has to be done separately on each iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Apple says indexing usually starts during first setup, after a system update or when stored data changes. The initial pass is the heaviest, while later updates are typically faster. MacRumors and 9to5Mac both reported that Apple recommends three conditions to speed the task up: leave the device alone, keep it plugged in and connect it to Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
That advice is useful because Spotlight may need network access to fetch mail and other content before it can index them. On a Mac, a progress indicator can appear in Spotlight or Siri when search is still working; on iPhone and iPad, Settings may show that Search and Siri are still being optimised, and Mail can display its own notice if message indexing has not finished.
The timing also matters because the indexing work sits at the centre of Apple’s search system. Macitynet reported that Apple’s documentation now treats the delay as normal behaviour rather than a fault, and said the process is becoming more important as Apple prepares newer search and AI features. In practical terms, the least disruptive approach is to let the device sit unused overnight while connected to power and the internet.
