HMD has introduced the Touch AI in China, a low-cost feature phone that relies on cloud AI services for functions like translation and image recognition, targeting users seeking simplicity and control.
HMD has unveiled a feature phone in China that borrows the visual language of the old Lumia line while adding a modern twist: a set of cloud-based AI tools. The device, called HMD Touch AI, is being sold for 469 yuan, or about £51, and is positioned less as a conventional smartphone than as a stripped-back handset for simple communication and guided assistance.
The handset is compact, measuring 102.3mm by 61.85mm by 10.85mm and weighing about 100g. It has a 3.2-inch touchscreen with a 240 x 320 resolution, a 2MP rear camera with LED flash and a 0.3MP front camera. HMD has also added a physical button on the top edge that can launch the AI assistant by default, although it can be reassigned to an SOS function.
Its internal specifications show how limited the hardware really is. The Touch AI uses a Unisoc T127 chip, just 64MB of RAM and 128MB of internal storage, with microSD expansion up to 32GB. It runs RTOS rather than Android, includes a 1,950mAh battery and charges over USB-C at 4W. Those figures make it clear the device is not built to process modern AI workloads locally.
Instead, HMD is relying on the cloud. In China, the handset uses ByteDance’s Doubao model to provide a small set of AI features, including translation, image recognition, photography help, language learning and image generation. The company also says the phone can support QR-code payments through Alipay from the lock screen.
That approach explains the product’s appeal and its limits. With no third-party app store, no short-video platforms and only a simple feature set, the Touch AI is aimed at users who may want a more controlled device, such as children or older people. But the AI branding is somewhat misleading: the handset is not running AI on-device in any meaningful sense, and instead depends on network access to deliver responses. HMD has not yet announced plans for markets outside China.
