How reviewing Android location permissions can boost battery life and protect privacy

A simple review of app location permissions on Android devices can significantly improve battery life and enhance user privacy, with recent updates making it easier to control how and when apps access location data.

Android battery life often looks worse than it should because a handful of apps keep asking for location data in the background. The first step is not to assume the handset needs a new battery, but to check which apps can access location when they are not in use. On many devices, that single review is enough to remove one of the most common hidden drains.

According to Android Developers, location is not a simple on-or-off feature. Modern Android can combine GPS with Wi-Fi scans, mobile masts and phone sensors to estimate position more quickly and accurately, especially indoors or in dense urban areas. That convenience has a cost if apps are allowed to query location frequently in the background, because the phone may keep waking parts of the system that would otherwise stay idle.

The most useful check is the Privacy Dashboard in Android Settings, where you can see which apps have recently used sensitive permissions. From there, it is worth opening the permissions manager and reviewing the location category app by app. The key question is straightforward: does this application really need your position all the time, or only while you are using it? For most services, “allow only while in use” is a more sensible default than permanent access.

Android 12 and later also allow a choice between precise and approximate location. That distinction matters. Navigation software needs accurate coordinates, but many shopping, news or local content apps only need a rough area. Reducing precision is mainly a privacy measure rather than a guaranteed battery fix, but it can still limit unnecessary detail being shared with apps that do not need it.

If battery life is the real concern, permissions should be checked against actual power use. On Pixel phones, the battery screen shows which apps are drawing the most energy, making it easier to spot an app that combines background location with high consumption. Google also advises keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimisation switched on. Those systems learn usage patterns over time and can restrict rarely used apps, whereas turning optimisation off can let them run more freely in the background. Google notes that the learning process can take time, and after a major update a temporary rise in battery use is normal while the device finishes post-update work.

It is usually better to change app permissions than to switch off location for the entire phone. A full location shutdown can affect maps, device-finding tools, sharing features and other location-based services. Android’s location services can also use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning to improve accuracy, which is another reason the global setting is not the right tool for every situation. TechRadar has also pointed out a related misconception: force-closing apps rarely saves power and can even use more, because the phone must reload them later. The practical approach is to adjust the few apps that genuinely need review, leave system optimisations in place, then test the effect over several days rather than expecting a universal gain.
