Homey simplifies firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave devices

Athom’s new Device Updates feature integrates firmware management for Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave products within the Homey ecosystem, addressing a key vulnerability in smart home security and usability.

Athom has added a new Device Updates feature to Homey, allowing users to install firmware for Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave products from within the Homey ecosystem rather than relying on manufacturer bridges, separate apps or manual flashing. The company says the process can now be handled through the Homey Mobile App or Homey Web App, with download verification, background installation, progress tracking and completion alerts built into the platform.

For Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, firmware packages are delivered through individual brand apps in the Homey App Store. Early supported names include IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Niko, Inovelli, Zooz, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng and Nous, with additional manufacturers expected to join. For Matter devices, Homey says it can automatically retrieve verified firmware from the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Distributed Compliance Ledger, removing the need for manufacturers to maintain separate update routes.

The feature is a practical fix for one of the most persistent weaknesses in smart homes: firmware is often left untouched because updating it is awkward. That can leave devices exposed to security flaws, bugs and instability. By pulling updates into one interface, Homey is trying to make routine maintenance less dependent on user effort and less tied to vendor-specific software. Athom chief executive Stefan Witkamp said device firmware is rarely updated because the process is cumbersome, and argued that handling updates inside Homey makes the whole setup more dependable.

Device Updates are available on Homey Cloud, Homey Pro models from 2023 to 2026, Homey Pro mini and Homey Self-Hosted Server. Homey says the function requires Homey Pro or Self-Hosted Server version 13.2.0 or later, together with Homey Mobile App version 9.10.0 or later, or the web app. The rollout follows Homey’s broader push into Matter support, with the company recently gaining Matter 1.5 certification for its ecosystem, including its Pro, Pro mini and Self-Hosted Server products.
