Samsung has unveiled its fastest-ever portable SSD, the P9, offering 8TB of storage and speeds up to 4,000 MB/s, signalling a leap into professional-grade performance for on-the-go creators and gamers.
Samsung has expanded its portable storage line-up with the P9 and P7, two USB4 external SSDs aimed at creators, gamers and anyone handling large files on the move. The company unveiled the drives at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, positioning them as part of a new P Series built for faster transfers, quicker backups and broader device compatibility.
The P9 is the higher-spec model. Samsung says it delivers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s, making it the fastest portable SSD in its series. The company also says it is the first 8TB USB4 portable SSD at this performance level, a capacity and speed combination intended for heavy workloads such as 12K direct recording and large RAW video projects.
The P7 is pitched as the more flexible option. Samsung says it also uses USB4 and is designed to work across desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and cameras. The drive has passed drop, shock and vibration testing, which makes it more suitable for travel and field use than a basic desktop accessory.
According to Samsung’s launch details, both drives will be sold in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB versions, with a global rollout starting on 31 August 2026. Reporting from Gizmochina and SamMobile says pricing will begin at $289.99 for the 1TB P7 and $339.99 for the 1TB P9, although regional pricing may vary. The broader message is clear: Samsung is using USB4 to push portable SSDs further into professional territory while keeping the P7 focused on everyday convenience.
