AT&T introduces a modular home security system combining Google Nest devices, professional monitoring, and cellular backup, targeting US households already within the AT&T ecosystem, offering resilience without long-term commitments.
AT&T Connected Life is pitched as a single home security system for customers who want monitored protection without piecing together separate products and contracts. The service brings together Google Nest hardware, Google Home software, Abode’s professional monitoring and AT&T’s cellular backup, with the aim of keeping security features running during power or broadband outages. It is available only to AT&T wireless or internet customers, which makes it a targeted offer rather than a broad-market one.
The equipment lineup is deliberately modular. AT&T sells three kits: Starter, Starter+ and Advanced. The basic package covers entry-level protection with a hub, door and window sensors and a motion detector. Starter+ adds a Nest Doorbell for front-door visibility. The top-tier kit expands coverage further with more sensors, a key fob, a keypad and Nest camera hardware. AT&T also says the system can work with additional Nest devices already in the home, including cameras, smart locks, lighting and thermostats.
Installation is designed to be straightforward and self-managed. AT&T says homeowners can set up the system themselves, with guidance through the Connected Life and Google Home apps, although professional installation is available at extra cost. The software side is central to the product. Users can arm and disarm the system, view live video, review events and manage connected devices from the app. Google Home’s detection features can distinguish between people, pets, packages and vehicles, which should reduce the number of misleading alerts.
Monitoring is split into two monthly plans and neither requires a long-term contract. The Essential plan costs $10.99 a month and includes self-monitoring, 30-day event video history, intelligent alerts and AT&T cellular backup. The Professional plan costs $21.99 a month and adds 24/7 monitoring by Abode, including emergency response for police, fire and medical incidents. AT&T says both plans use cellular backup through a hub with a built-in radio and battery, so the system can continue to function during an outage.
The proposition is strongest for households already tied into AT&T and Google Nest. SecuritySystemsReview.com said the LTE-M backhaul performed well in rural testing, while Android Authority noted the system’s outage resilience and the availability of DIY setup. The main limitations are equally clear: you need AT&T service to subscribe, the system does not support Apple HomeKit for its security sensors, and several features still depend on working internet and Wi-Fi. That leaves Connected Life as a sensible hybrid for some homes, but not an obvious fit for everyone.
