Samsung’s decision not to enable Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless on Galaxy phones leaves a clear gap for users who want the best possible wireless sound. The issue is not hardware alone. Many Snapdragon-powered Galaxy devices already have the silicon needed for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound stack, but Samsung has kept to its own codec path instead, limiting advanced Bluetooth audio to its proprietary ecosystem. According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon Sound is designed to support aptX Lossless and uses Bluetooth High Speed Link technology to provide the bandwidth needed for bit-for-bit audio transmission.
Samsung’s alternative is the Samsung Seamless Codec, including the Ultra High Quality mode used with newer Galaxy Buds. Samsung says that SSC UHQ supports 24-bit/96kHz audio on compatible phones and earbuds, but it remains tied to Galaxy audio accessories rather than open to third-party headphones. That makes it a high-resolution option, but not a true lossless one in the way aptX Lossless is meant to be.
The distinction matters. High bitrate alone does not guarantee lossless audio, and Samsung’s codec, while improved, still compresses the stream. Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless is meant to deliver CD-quality audio without altering the source data, which is why enthusiasts regard it as the more exacting standard. Qualcomm also makes clear that manufacturers must choose to implement its Bluetooth stack and may need to pay licensing fees to do so.
That helps explain Samsung’s position. The company has an incentive to keep users inside its own accessory ecosystem, where SSC UHQ is a selling point for Galaxy Buds. There is also a practical complication: Samsung’s flagship range often uses different processors in different regions, with Snapdragon chips in some markets and Exynos chips in others. Enabling aptX Lossless only on some variants would create an uneven user experience. For now, Galaxy owners who want Qualcomm’s top Bluetooth codec must rely on workarounds such as external USB-C transmitters.
