Xiaomi’s Redmi 17 challenges budget smartphone norms with extended software support and massive battery life in Japan

Xiaomi launches the Redmi 17 in Japan, offering a battery-focused device with six years of security updates and a low initial price, disrupting traditional budget smartphone expectations.

Xiaomi has launched the REDMI 17 in Japan as a stripped-back, low-cost smartphone aimed at buyers who value battery life and long software support more than outright performance. The 4GB/128GB version carries a list price of ¥34,980, while the 4GB/256GB model is set at ¥44,980. For a limited period until 14 October, Xiaomi Japan is offering launch prices of ¥29,980 and ¥39,980 respectively. The phone is sold in Deep Blue, Black, Oak Green and Lotus Purple.

The device is notable less for speed than for compromise. It does not support 5G and is fitted with only 4GB of memory, a step down from the previous REDMI 15 5G, according to ITmedia. That positioning makes the REDMI 17 a deliberately basic handset at a time when smartphone prices continue to rise, as the company seeks to keep the entry point below the ¥30,000 mark during the introductory period.

Its main selling point is power endurance. Xiaomi says the REDMI 17 uses a 7,500mAh battery, which it claims can last up to two days under normal use. The phone also supports 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse charging, so it can double as a power bank for other devices. A 6.9-inch display and an LED notification light round out the hardware package.

The software promise is more ambitious than the hardware. Xiaomi says the REDMI 17 will receive six years of security updates and as many as four major Android version upgrades. That level of support is unusual in the budget segment and is likely intended to offset the phone’s limited performance headroom. At 78.42 x 170.12 x 8.8mm and about 232g, it is also a large and relatively heavy handset, reinforcing its role as a battery-first device rather than a compact all-rounder.
