Harnessing the power of free open source apps from F-Droid, Android smartphones can now double as compact tools for measuring, levelling, converting units, and document scanning, transforming everyday devices into essential home assistants.
Samsung Galaxy phones can double as a capable pocket toolbox for basic home tasks, and the same is true of most Android devices. Rather than relying on cluttered app stores full of ad-supported utilities, the approach described here leans on free and open source software, with F-Droid as the main source of downloads.
For small-scale measuring, the Ruler app turns a handset into an on-screen ruler with inches and centimetres displayed together. The app also includes calibration, which matters because physical accuracy can vary by device; the app’s own developer site says it supports multi-touch measurement, while the How-To Geek author said he checked it against a tape measure on a Samsung Galaxy S24 FE.
The same app can act as a protractor through its angle-measuring mode, though that function has to be enabled in settings and is easier to use with the ruler display switched off. For levelling jobs, a separate tool such as Bubble Level app gives Android users a virtual spirit level, with modes for flat surfaces and vertical alignment, while similar apps also offer plumb and camera-based views.
For converting units, Converter NOW is broader than a web search because it can show several equivalent measurements at once across many categories, including length, area, time, currency, speed and fuel use. It is designed for quick comparisons, which makes it more useful than looking up a single conversion in isolation.
The phone can also replace a basic document scanner. MakeACopy captures a document, lets the user crop it precisely and includes OCR for text recognition, so the result can be saved as a PDF or JPEG and sent on if needed. For people who need even more, AR Ruler apps extend the idea further by using the camera to measure distances, angles, area, perimeter and even some 3D volumes.
