Supernetworks has launched SPR, an open-source router platform prioritising security through individual device identities and strict network segmentation, challenging conventional home networking gear with its innovative, programmable, security-first approach.
SPR, the open-source router platform from Supernetworks, is being positioned as a security-first alternative to conventional home networking gear. The project’s central idea is to give each device its own identity, its own access rules and its own network boundaries, reducing the chance that one compromised endpoint can move laterally across the rest of the system. According to Supernetworks’ documentation, the platform is designed to combine WiFi, DNS, routing and policy controls in one programmable stack rather than bolting security on afterwards.
That approach depends on per-device credentials and strict isolation. Supernetworks says each WiFi device receives a unique passphrase, while remote devices can authenticate with a WireGuard public key. The result is an architecture in which devices are placed into tightly controlled network segments, with firewall rules limiting spoofing, impersonation and unauthorised traffic between clients. The company also says the system supports wired devices through VLAN tagging and is intended to work as a defence-in-depth platform against both local and remote attack paths.
Feature-wise, SPR is broad rather than minimal. The published feature list includes WPA3 support, WiFi 6 compatibility, multi-PSK operation, secure router chaining, multi-WAN load balancing, mesh support with wired backhaul, policy-based forwarding and multicast handling. On the privacy side, the platform offers per-device DNS rules, DNS-over-HTTPS queries and ad-block lists. Supernetworks also highlights visibility tools such as IP traffic monitoring, DNS logs, an event system and an API for automation and integrations.
The company says the interface is built with React and that an iOS app is available for some functions. It also describes SPR as running on a range of Linux systems through Docker, with a plugin system for extending the platform. Some capabilities, including scheduling, event triggers and certain routing features, are reserved for SPR Plus, a paid subscription intended to support ongoing development.
Supernetworks presents SPR as a system for users who want stronger isolation without needing to understand the mechanics of VLANs and firewall policy. The company says its wider goal is to deliver an easy-to-use router stack that remains programmable, auditable and focused on security rather than convenience features alone.
