TCL expands its Nxtpaper concept from show-floor hardware into the retail smartphone market with the launch of the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro, featuring innovative matte AMOLED screens designed for enhanced outdoor visibility and colour contrast in mid-range devices.
TCL has moved its Nxtpaper display concept from show-floor hardware into retail phones, launching the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro as mid-range devices built around 6.83-inch screens with a matte, paper-like finish. The company says the aim is to combine AMOLED’s colour and contrast with reduced reflections, making the panel easier to use in bright light without sacrificing the smoothness expected from a standard smartphone display.
The P80 Ultra leads the range. In the UK it starts at £480, while European pricing is listed at €549 for the 256GB model. It uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 7400 Elite processor, pairs 8GB of RAM with up to 512GB of storage, and carries a 50-megapixel main camera alongside a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The display is reported to support a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 3,200 nits, underlining TCL’s effort to make screen quality the main selling point.
The P80 Pro keeps the same display size but trims back the camera hardware and drops to a Dimensity 7300-class chip, with pricing set at £430 in the UK and €429 in Europe. TCL has also shown a standard P80 model in some markets, positioned as a lower-cost variant. The broader launch suggests the company is trying to turn Nxtpaper from a niche differentiator into a product family with clearer price tiers.
Availability is expected to begin through Amazon later in September, with a wider European rollout first and US availability to follow. TCL has been developing Nxtpaper for several generations, and the move to AMOLED appears designed to solve one of the technology’s longstanding trade-offs: better readability without giving up the vividness of modern OLED-style panels. Whether that balance is convincing in daily use will depend on battery life, outdoor visibility and how the matte coating holds up over time, but TCL has at least given mid-range buyers something more distinctive than a familiar spec sheet.
