HP’s HyperX-branded Omen 15 is a reminder that a gaming laptop does not need to be extreme to be effective. According to CNET’s review, the machine keeps a restrained look, avoids the usual aggressive flourishes, and instead focuses on a workable balance of efficiency, usable graphics power and sensible everyday portability. The result is a laptop that is better suited to players who want a capable 1080p machine with enough flexibility for work than to buyers chasing the highest possible frame rates.
That balance is reflected in the model range. CNET noted that the Omen 15 is sold in several configurations, spanning older and newer Intel and Ryzen platforms, with the review unit sitting near the top end of the line-up. Windows Central and Tom’s Guide both highlighted the tested machine’s Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor, 32GB of memory, 1TB SSD and Nvidia RTX 5070 graphics, while 91Mobiles pointed out that lower trims use less powerful parts, including RTX 5050 and RTX 5060 options. In other words, the name covers a wide spread of hardware, so the experience depends heavily on the version chosen.
At the top end, the laptop delivers the sort of performance that makes sense for a 15-inch gaming system. CNET found that it handled modern titles well at 1080p, with triple-digit frame rates in several benchmarks and enough overhead for demanding games when upscaling features were enabled. Windows Central and Tom’s Guide reached similar conclusions, saying the Omen 15 is strongest at 1080p and can cope with tougher AAA games if DLSS and frame generation are used. The limitation is clear enough: native 2,880×1,800 gaming is possible only with compromises, which means the display’s sharpness is best enjoyed in less demanding titles or after adjusting settings.
That panel is widely described as the laptop’s best feature. CNET praised the 15.3-inch OLED screen for its 120Hz refresh rate, strong HDR brightness, wide DCI-P3 coverage and excellent colour accuracy. Windows Central and Tom’s Guide also singled it out as the stand-out component, with both reviews describing it as unusually impressive for a mainstream gaming laptop. The display gives the Omen 15 a more premium feel than its pricing alone might suggest, and it is also useful for creative work, not just games.
Other parts of the machine are more mixed. CNET said the chassis is understated, solid and surprisingly well controlled thermally, while 91Mobiles likewise reported good cooling. But the port selection is thin, with only one USB-C port and no Thunderbolt or USB4 support, and the speakers are merely adequate. CNET also pointed to a keyboard that is serviceable rather than distinctive, although the 8,000Hz polling rate will appeal to gamers, and the battery life was notably strong for the category, reaching more than ten hours in video playback testing. Taken together, the Omen 15 looks like a practical, well-rounded gaming laptop rather than a class leader on raw speed. It is a sensible choice if display quality, battery life and quiet operation matter more than maximum graphics performance.
