Home internet upgrades now prioritise security and upgradeability over speed

As the demand for connected home devices grows, experts emphasise the importance of secure, easily upgradeable network hardware, shifting focus from speed to security and long-term support in home internet upgrades.

The most important decision in a home internet upgrade is no longer simply how fast the broadband package is. It is whether the hardware gives the household a secure, replaceable network core. That shift is reflected in official guidance as well as consumer advice: the US National Institute of Standards and Technology published NISTIR 8425A on 10 September 2024 to define cybersecurity outcomes for consumer-grade routers, and the Federal Trade Commission says the router is the main privacy control point for homes full of internet-connected devices. For buyers, the first practical distinction is still the simplest one. A modem links the home to the provider’s line, while a router distributes that connection to phones, laptops, televisions and other devices over Ethernet and Wi‑Fi. The agency also recommends disabling features that are not needed and removing old devices from the network altogether, because an ageing smart camera, speaker or television can become the weakest point even when the router itself is configured properly. The broader lesson is that replacing networking gear should be treated as routine maintenance rather than a one-off purchase.
