Huawei innovates with the world's first wide-screen candybar smartphone in the Pura X View

Huawei unveils the Pura X View, a flagship device characterised by its ultra-wide 16:9.5 display and massive 7,000mAh battery, signalling a potential new niche in smartphone design.

Huawei has now attached firm pricing to the Pura X View, putting a 5,999 yuan entry point on a handset that had been teased since 20 August as a new take on the conventional smartphone. The 12GB/256GB model sits below 12GB/512GB and 12GB/1TB versions at 6,999 yuan and 8,499 yuan respectively. The rollout has not been entirely linear: Gizmochina said Huawei used its 7 September event to announce that pre-orders would begin on 9 September, while Notebookcheck and Huawei Central had already reported earlier reservations through VMall and JD.com during the second half of August. What makes the device notable is not its price but its proportions. Android Authority described the Pura X View as a non-foldable glass-slab phone built around a 16:9.5 display, a sharp break from the 19.5:9 and 20:9 screens that dominate most premium handsets. In effect, Huawei is trying to transplant the wider canvas it previously explored in the Pura X and Pura X Max foldables into a fixed-body phone with no hinge, positioning it for films, reading, gaming and document work rather than for maximum one-handed reach. Huawei’s Chinese specification sheet puts the phone at 144.1mm by 87mm and 6.68mm thick, with a listed weight of about 201g including the battery. The display is a 6.39-inch OLED panel at 2232 x 1320, with a 120Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling and Kunlun Glass protection. Huawei and the surrounding launch coverage also point to unusually narrow 1.05mm bezels, a quoted 96.1% screen-to-body ratio, 6,500-nit peak brightness and 2160Hz PWM dimming. The battery specification is unusually aggressive for a device this thin. Huawei lists a 7,000mAh typical capacity, with a rated capacity of 6,815mAh, alongside support for up to 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 5W wired reverse charging. The phone ships with HarmonyOS 7.0, 12GB of RAM and a choice of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage, with no microSD expansion. Gizmochina added that Huawei has paired the Kirin 9030S platform with a full-area vapour chamber cooling system and a ring-type gain antenna, suggesting the company is trying to offset the thermal and signal compromises that can come with packing a large cell into a very slim chassis. That chipset is also more evolutionary than surprising. Huawei Central reported ahead of the price reveal that the Pura X View uses the Kirin 9030S rather than a brand-new mobile processor, tying it back to the same family already seen in the Pura 90 Pro range. According to that report, the chip uses a 1+3+4 CPU layout, with one core at 2.69GHz, three at 2.15GHz and four at 1.62GHz, plus a Maleoon 935F GPU running at 933MHz. Huawei Central also said Huawei had already opened in-store demonstrations and booking channels before the formal pricing announcement, reinforcing the impression that the company was staging this launch in phases rather than as a single-day retail switch-on. On imaging, Huawei’s own materials settle some of the confusion created by early third-party listings. The official specification page describes a rear array led by a 200-megapixel f/1.8 main camera with optical stabilisation, plus a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto, an 8-megapixel ultrawide macro camera and a second-generation Red Maple colour sensor. Huawei also lists 3.7x optical zoom, 100x digital zoom and 4K video capture, while the software feature list includes AI pose suggestions and AI dynamic photos. That differs from PhoneArena’s early database entry, which catalogued the handset as having three 50-megapixel rear cameras and slightly different overall dimensions, a reminder that the public specification picture was still shifting around launch. Huawei is also using launch incentives to soften the premium price. Gizmochina said early buyers would receive five purchase gifts and that students could qualify for discounts worth up to 944 yuan. The same report listed two official accessories: a vegan leather magnetic case at 129 yuan and a pen-box style case at 469 yuan designed to carry a stylus. Beyond those extras, Huawei’s own specification sheet places the phone squarely in flagship territory, with IP68 and IP69 protection, eSIM support, stereo audio and Huawei-branded fast charging hardware in the box, while PhoneArena separately notes a side fingerprint sensor and Dolby Atmos support. The Pura X View therefore looks less like a routine annual upgrade and more like a format test. Android Authority noted that a very wide display can appear smaller on paper than a conventional 6.9-inch tall panel simply because smartphone screens are measured diagonally, even when the usable area is greater in real tasks. If the August reservations reported by Notebookcheck and Huawei Central translate into strong sales after the 7 September price reveal, Huawei may have established a niche between the ordinary slab phone and the foldable designs from which this wider-screen idea first emerged.
