ASUS emphasizes diagnosis-led approach to tackling slow Windows 11 laptops

ASUS’s support advice advocates a precise, diagnostic-first strategy for resolving sluggishness in Windows 11 laptops, highlighting hardware, software, and thermal factors before resorting to resets or repairs.

ASUS’s own support material suggests that many “slow laptop” complaints on Windows 11 are best treated as a diagnosis problem before they become a repair problem. In the company’s MyASUS System Diagnosis utility, one of the preset scenarios is called “Slow system”, and ASUS says it checks memory, hard disk drive, hard disk space, application usage and fan behaviour. That matters because it frames sluggishness not as a single Windows fault, but as a short list of measurable causes: too little RAM, too little free storage, too many programs open at once, or heat that is forcing the machine to back off performance.

The official ASUS troubleshooting order is also more specific than a generic restart-and-hope approach. ASUS UK advises users to disconnect accessories such as external drives and memory cards, then bring BIOS, Windows packages and drivers up to date before trying anything more invasive. The MyASUS diagnostics page in the US adds an important caution that many consumer guides miss: some update scenarios can lead to BitLocker recovery, so users should save the recovery key, or disable BitLocker first, before running those updates. That warning is particularly relevant on modern laptops where device encryption may already be enabled.

Power management is another area where ASUS draws a sharper distinction between product lines than many broad Windows guides do. Its UK support page says users who feel a system is lagging should raise the power or fan mode where the model supports it. On some devices that control sits inside MyASUS under ASUS Intelligent Performance Technology or Fan Mode; on others, ASUS says the setting may not appear at all, and users should instead use Windows’ own controls in Settings > System > Power & battery. The company also separates gaming and creator machines from ordinary notebooks: ROG and TUF systems should use Armoury Crate for fan adjustment, gaming handhelds should use Armoury Crate SE, and ProArt machines should rely on ProArt Creator Hub.

ASUS is equally clear that some slowdowns are temporary and should not be “fixed” mid-update. Its support page tells users to check whether Windows Update is still “Downloading” or “Installing” before changing settings, and to wait if the machine is busy completing a feature update. The same guidance points to antivirus scans and download or file-sharing software as common background drains on performance. It even notes that running more than one antivirus package can be counterproductive, adding overhead to a machine that is already struggling. Heat remains a parallel concern throughout the official advice: ASUS states that when device temperatures are high, performance is reduced.

Microsoft’s own Windows guidance broadly supports that sequence, but adds a stronger emphasis on measuring what is happening. It recommends Task Manager to inspect CPU, memory and disk usage, and to review the Startup apps and Performance tabs before removing software blindly. Microsoft says startup apps can lengthen boot time and raise background usage, while Tom’s Guide makes the same point in plainer consumer terms: machines that spend weeks or months in sleep mode can accumulate lingering processes and driver issues, so a full restart still has value even on a modern Windows 11 laptop.

Storage pressure is another recurring theme, and here the third-party reporting adds a useful threshold. Microsoft says low disk space can cut system performance and recommends Storage Sense, Temporary files clean-up and removing unused applications from Installed apps. Windows Central goes further, saying the drop-off often becomes noticeable when the system drive is roughly 70 per cent full. Tom’s Guide recommends sorting installed software by size to identify large, unused programmes that can be removed quickly. Taken together, that advice makes the storage check less vague: if launches, file operations and log-in responsiveness are all slowing down, the system drive is one of the first places to inspect.

Windows tuning can also matter once the obvious causes have been ruled out. Microsoft still recommends the old but effective step of opening the visual-effects controls and selecting “Adjust for best performance” to reduce animation overhead. Windows Central adds a separate warning about software quality itself, arguing that outdated or badly designed applications can damage responsiveness even when the hardware is otherwise healthy, and suggesting that users favour reputable software sources, including the Microsoft Store where possible. That does not make Store apps inherently fast, but it reflects a broader point: poor software can be as harmful to perceived speed as weak hardware.

The ASUS utilities become most useful when the problem may no longer be software at all. The MyASUS diagnostics page says its one-click hardware test can examine the adapter, memory, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hard disk drive, solid-state disk, battery, fan and system status. ASUS also notes that some machines will not show the Device Settings page or the System Diagnosis tab, meaning those features are model-dependent. Where the checks are available, they help separate an overloaded Windows session from a degrading battery, failing storage device or cooling problem. That is a more meaningful distinction than simply saying a laptop “feels slow”.

If the machine remains sluggish after updates, power checks, storage clean-up and startup trimming, ASUS UK says users should start considering corrupted applications, unwanted bundled software and, eventually, a system reset. Microsoft’s advice aligns with that final escalation path, including a malware quick scan through Windows Security and optional updates for drivers. It also offers a note of realism that many how-to articles avoid: some older PCs may not improve much because the hardware no longer meets modern performance demands. In practice, that means software maintenance can recover lost responsiveness, but it cannot fully disguise an ageing laptop that is short on memory, storage speed or thermal headroom.
